Using porcelain caps, or crowns, for weakened teeth with Georgetown, TX dentist

Dr. Andrew Edmonds knows how important a patient’s oral health is. However, when trauma, decay, or other problems arise and impact the strength of a tooth, a patient might need a restorative solution to protect the tooth and maintain their natural smile. In many instances, this restoration is a dental crown, sometimes known as a “porcelain cap.” Dental crowns for teeth are made to add an extra layer of protection and strength to a tooth that has experienced a problem and is weaker or more susceptible to breakage. Georgetown, TX area patients who visit 4405 Dental Studio will learn about the advantages of crown treatment with our team of providers.

What is the process of obtaining a dental crown?

Dental crowns require at least two visits spaced weeks apart. The entire process goes as follows:

  • Evaluation. Patients are evaluated by Dr. Andrew Edmonds to determine if they are a good fit for a dental crown. It is often recommended if patients have had root canal therapy, had damage to their tooth’s structure, or have experienced a large cavity that impacts the integrity of the natural tooth.
  • Preparation. Once patients decide to have a dental crown placed, preparation begins. This involves the dentist removing a significant portion of tooth enamel all around the tooth’s structure. In doing so, it reduces the risk of the dental crown looking bulky when bonded in place.
  • Impressions. Impressions, or molds, are taken of the prepared tooth and sent off to a dental laboratory for fabrication of the final crown. Until the next appointment, patients are fitted with a temporary crown over the tooth to protect the structure until the final crown is complete.
  • Placement. Once the dental crown is complete, the patient returns to the dental office to have the final crown bonded in place. With proper care, most patients will enjoy their dental crown for many years!
