Aftercare for a Tooth Extraction in Georgetown, TX

When a tooth cannot be repaired with a filling or a crown, the last resort would be to opt for a tooth extraction, which can be an uncomfortable situation for a patient. If you are planning on having a tooth extraction performed in Georgetown, TX, there are a few aftercare steps that may help you get through the process a little easier.

Apply Ice as Necessary

Applying ice to the affected area will reduce inflammation and help to keep the area numb for a while. You can take over-the-counter pain medication as well to fight off the discomfort associated with the extraction.

Keep a Piece of Gauze Over the Wound

Keep a piece of gauze firmly positioned over the wound. This will help to control the bleeding and may help to control and keep the inflammation down as well. You may want to change the gauze every four to six hours to reduce the risk of infection.

Rest for at least a Day

If you have had a tooth extracted, try to take it easy for a day or two. Overexerting yourself may cause the wound to start bleeding all over again. This can increase your risk of infection and cause it to take longer to heal than normal.

Don’t Rinse, Spit or Suck on a Straw for at Least 24 hours

Make sure that you do not rinse, spit, or suck on a straw for at least 24 hours after the extraction. Rinsing or sucking on a straw can dislodge the small blood clot that is covering the wound. Dislodging this blood clot can lead to a dry socket, which can be extremely painful. It can also increase your risk of infection.
